About Izola
Izola is a lively tourist town on Slovenia's short coast. Once
an island, it was already inhabited in the first century A.D. In
medieval times it was surrounded by walls but these were demolished
in the beginning of the 19th century.
The ruins were used to fill up the sea between the island and the
coast. In the early 13th century, Izola declared independence and
became a town with its own laws and authorities.
Much of the original town is still intact, with narrow winding
medieval streets, sometimes crossed overhead by archways.
Day trips from Izola include Venice (90 minutes by fast boat),
the Postojna Caves (60 km) and Ljubljana (110 km).
